On April 10, 2019, Samsung has introduced a new member of the Galaxy A series. In the future, the Samsung Galaxy A80 and the previously unveiled A70 expand the model range. The A80 is the smartphone, which was rumored to Galaxy A90 .

As part of the presentation, Samsung explained who the individual devices are intended for: A10, A20 and A30 are aimed at users who only need basic functions. These models would once have been found in the now discontinued Galaxy J series . Galaxy A50 and A70 are intended to appeal to a slightly more demanding audience, while the Samsung Galaxy A80 is the high-end device in the range. The Galaxy A smartphones with a digit number in the name (for example, the A6) apparently form a separate device family.

Galaxy A80: That makes the camera so special

As attentive ADITECHS readers know, Samsung has now begun to innovate in the mid-range . Above all, the Samsung Galaxy A80 attracts attention with a fancy camera: on the back there is a triple camera, which automatically moves upwards and turns forward as soon as you select the selfie mode.

This has several advantages: On the one hand, the design makes a separate front camera and thus also a display recess (“notch”) superfluous. This makes the Samsung Galaxy A80 the first device to feature Samsung’s 2018 “New Infinity Display” – an almost rimless screen with no notch or camera hole.

On the other hand, selfies with the triple camera should look much better than you are used to from traditional front cameras. Because these usually can not compete with main cameras. The Galaxy A80’s triple camera includes a 48-MP main and an 8-MP ultra-wide angle lens (128 degrees). This is joined by a 3D lens (“ToF”), which allows, among other things, the recording of videos with blurred background (“bokeh”). It also supports an image stabilization, which should prevent Ruckler.

First “New Infinity Display”

The “New Infinity Display” of the Samsung Galaxy A80 gives you a lot of screen space: It measures 6.7 inches diagonally and dissolves with 2400 x 1080 pixels (Full HD Plus). The renunciation of any recess for the camera makes a positive impact. Obviously, you get an almost rimless Super AMOLED display, without having to put up with any disadvantages. Interestingly, the German press release describes the screen as a “full infinity display”. It also has a fingerprint sensor that unlocks your smartphone.

No memory cards for the Galaxy A80

For the computing power, an unspecified octa-core chipset is responsible, which clocks at 2.2 GHz. He is assisted by 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of internal memory. The latter can not be extended. Because the Samsung Galaxy A80 has no room for microSD cards. You also do not need a 3.5 mm jack for wired headphones. So you need a corresponding USB-C adapter for this. The battery has a capacity of 3700 mAh and should bring you well over the day. Fast charging (“Super Fast Charging”) is possible with up to 25 watts. The operating system is pre-installed with Android 9.0 Pie.

Galaxy A80: price and availability

According to the press release, the Samsung Galaxy A80 will be available soon. According to the manufacturer, the device is expected to be “on sale in May 2019”. When the time comes, you can choose from three color options: Phantom Black, Angel Gold, and Ghost White. The price of the Samsung Galaxy A80, the manufacturer has not betrayed. Details should follow shortly.
