Xiaomi has been using the Redmi family for several years as a reference for its cheaper phones, but this year they have decided to go one step further and turn it into an independent
If last year with the Redmi Note 5 we had one of the best mid-range phones until the arrival of the Mi A2 , with this new terminal we have the feeling that they can repeat play.
We have been testing it since last week and in our analysis of the Redmi Note

Evolution is in the design: a mobile that looks more than it costs
One of the most used materials for the back cover of mobile phones is glass. We’ve seen it in models like the Mi 8 , but traditionally Xiaomi had always bet on metalfor its mid-range.
With the Redmi Note 7 the strategy changes radically and is committed to a glass body in the back protected by Gorilla Glass 5 . With this glass you get a protection superior to that we had in the Mi 8, as this incorporated the fourth generation of Corning glass. A small example of how technology expands rapidly from one year to the next.
The design of the Redmi Note 7 follows the usual patterns we have in 2019, with a front of reduced frames thanks to the ‘notch’ in the form of introduced water . It is not the mobile with more optimized edges, but in a similar size to previous generations the screen grows 0.3 inches.
Maintaining a size very similar to that of previous Xiaomi phones, the Redmi Note 7 makes a significant jump in screen ratio thanks to the ‘notch’ in the form of water but also in the finishes with its glass back cover.
If we compare it with other mobiles of its category, we see that the majority is placed around the 8 millimeters of thickness, except in those mobiles with less battery. Still, Xiaomi is still one step behind Huawei and Samsung in space optimization .
|HEIGHT (MM)||WIDTH (MM)||THICKNESS (MM)||WEIGHT (G)||RATIO||BATTERY (MAH)|
|REDMI NOTE 7||6.3 “||159.2||75.2||8.1||186||81.4%||4.000|
|XIAOMI MI A2||5.99 “||158.7||75.4||7.3||166||77.4%||3.080|
|HONOR 10 LITE||6.21 “||154.8||73.64||7.95||162||83.1%||3,400|
|HUAWEI P SMART 2019||6.21 “||155.2||73.4||8||160||83.1%||3,400|
|SAMSUNG GALAXY M20||6.3 “||156.6||74.5||8.8||186||83.6%||5,000|
The edges are slightly rounded with 2.5D glass and the grip is quite comfortable. The glass body does not reflect as much light as we have seen in Huawei or Honor terminals, but the color gradients are quite successful. There are available versions in black, red-pink and blue-violet, the latter being the one we have been able to prove.
Contrary to what happens for example in the Mi 9, the touch offers a more classic and glass-like feel, without trying to imitate a softer and more rubbery finish . For fingerprints, the back cover is easily impregnated with them although having the model with bluish gradient is not noticeable.
The rear camera protrudes slightly despite the fact that the body of the mobile is not very thin either. Placed on the table dances a little, although not as much as in the Mi 9.
In general the level of design and finishing is very good, although it should be noted that the edges are plastic and the buttons on / off and volume do not have a different rough finish. In this aspect, while at first sight and in hand the result convinces, if we look closely you can see that it has had to be cut somewhere.
In certain details such as plastic edges or
There is no element out of the ordinary. The fingerprint reader is behind, the USB type C connector below, surrounded by the speakers. At the top is also added a noise canceling microphone, audio jack and infrared port, just above the notch on the screen. The buttons are on the right side and the hybrid slot on the left. Here it is appreciated to have microSD to expand the storage.
Another component that has also remained in the Redmi Note 7 Pro is the 3.5mm jack located at the top, right next to the infrared port. A traditional design that thanks to the improvement of the screens and the commitment to glass, offers us a very convincing result and that until now we did not usually find in this price range.
Screen: with this brightness who misses the contrast
The Redmi Note 7 incorporates a 6.3 inch screen in 19.5: 9 format with a FullHD + resolution of 2,340 x 1,080 pixels, a configuration that gives us a data of 409 ppi. At the level of sharpness, we are at a fairly common level within the mid-range and fully expected to maintain a good level of detail without penalizing performance.
It is not the technical characteristics of resolution that should matter most to us. The panel used comes with LTPS Incell technology and offers an NTSC color coverage of 84% with a 1,500: 1 contrast. How does it translate into day to day? We have a screen with natural colors but not as intense tones as those of an AMOLED. To be an LCD panel the colors are correct and we have a panel of good quality, but we are not facing a screen that surprises for its image quality
According to official data, we have a brightness peak of 450 nits. In our experience we have noticed that the screen enjoys a very good level of brightness but what we liked the most is the good functioning of the automatic brightness . Unlike in other terminals that you always have to wait for it to get well, in Redmi Note 7 it goes pretty well.
The minimum brightness we liked also, reaching a very low point which is very nice to read at night with the dark room. In addition, in our unit for the moment we have not detected any light leakage
The brightness of the Redmi Note 7 Pro’s screen is its strong point, not only the peak of nits (450 theoreticians), but also the sensor to adjust it automatically or the minimum level to read at night.
The tactile sensitivity is good and the viewing angles are correct. We have noticed that from a certain angle the brightness decreases considerably, but it is not something that interferes with the use. Yes, we would have liked to find a better oleophobic layer, since the main screen is stained with fingerprints as well as the back one . Something that together with the reflections of the glass means that, in the exterior, a result is not achieved at the height of the general feeling transmitted by the terminal.
With a screen ratio of 81.4%, the Redmi Note 7 is a clear improvement over the Mi A2 and its 77.4%, although we are on the same line as the Redmi Note 6 Pro and its 81.1%. Regarding the latter, the screen is similar in size and resolution.
Through the screen options, MIUI allows us to choose between several screen configurations, depending on whether we want to maintain a natural or improved contrast. By default it comes in the first one although if we activate the second one we will not notice a very big change either.
Other software options related to the screen is the activation of the reading mode or activation by double touch to wake up . We do not always have an active screen because we do not have an AMOLED panel.
Performance: loosening the accelerator to maintain the same speed
Next to the Qualcomm processor, 4GB of LPDDR4X RAM is added . The performance is very good, all applications open quickly, moving between the menus is pleasant and we can play with ease. We do not have the fluency of a high-end, but with this chipset we already reached a point quite pleasant for day to day.
We have tested the Redmi Note 7 with games such as Asphalt 9 and PUBG Mobile and the fluency has been quite good, although the graphics have not been able to place them to the maximum. On the contrary, we have not been convinced by refrigeration . We would not say it warms up, but at this point there is still room for improvement for the mid-range.
Unfortunately for fans of Fortnite, as we have seen the Adreno 512 GPU is not compatible with the game of Epic Games. For users more gamers, the most suitable product within the brand would be the Pocophone F1 .
Here we leave you with the benchmark table of the Redmi Note 7 , with results that as we see do not tell us a story very different from the one we already had.
During these days that we have been testing it, we have not had connectivity problems and it has been connected fast all the time. Both at the WiFi level and with data and also using GPS. On the contrary, we do not have NFC , an addition that Xiaomi has been adding in some terminals and we expected to find it here too.
The version we have tested has 64GB, of which 50GB are free . Fortunately for those who want to expand the space, the Redmi Note 7 Pro is compatible with microSD cards up to 256GB.
Software: MIUI 10 flies, although it still has some mishaps
Despite arriving with a new brand, we still have the same layer of Xiaomi customization. In the Redmi Note 7 we found MIUI 10 Global updated to Android 9 Pie with the security patch of February.
Both the performance and design of MIUI 10 have improved a lot, but what we have is very different from what pure Android offers. MIUI is a layer with a multitude of options and pre-installed applications and in fact we have noticed that we added some that we did not remember.
As soon as you set up the Redmi Note 7 Pro, we will have access to applications to take notes, calendar, file manager, music, your own browser … but also very specific applications of the brand such as the Xiaomi store, an own application store
MIUI 10 is a very fluid customization layer and its design has been improving, but we have a large number of pre-installed applications and we have had a specific failure that has forced us to restart the terminal.
The software of the Redmi Note 7 Pro goes well, but as we say you can tell it is not a light
It is expected that Xiaomi update the software during these weeks to ensure that most bugs are corrected, but that feeling that MIUI still does not achieve the stability of pure Android has not gone away.
White tones and large icons predominate in MIUI 10, although what we miss the most is possibly the multitasking tab . Here we have vertical cards in a design quite different from what we have in other devices.
Another addition that gives us the software is the possibility of changing the navigation of the system by gestures, to eliminate the traditional buttons and move without the usual pulsations. They are not bad, but they need to improve their sensitivity to become an interesting option. For my part, I did not leave them active.
But if there is something that has caught our attention is the activation of ads by default in several pre-installed
Suddenly finding ads is not strange.
For example, we have them activated by default in the installation of applications.
And in the end to maintain this quality / price has a cost.
The software of Xiaomi is a very characteristic element of the Redmi Note 7. We have radioFM, WideLine L1 support and add-ons as dual applications. The number of options is very high and the performance has been improving a lot. MIUI is no longer the layer that penalized, but as with EMUI in Huawei, it is still a layer of personalization that for some users is not ideal.
The security of the terminals is a section that has been gaining relevance with the passage of time. But in Redmi Note 7 all these advances that we have seen as the integrated readers on the screen or the Face ID have not yet arrived. The middle range of Redmi offers us a traditional rear fingerprint reader that offers, yes, an excellent result. It is placed in the most comfortable situation, it is fast and very reliable. Nothing to object to in that element.
The same thing does not happen with facial unlocking. Or rather, the lack of facial recognition. As we have seen in other terminals of Xiaomi, the face unlocking is not activated by default . It is possible to activate it by changing the region, but it is not something that we recommend or that all users want to do it.
The rear fingerprint reader is very reliable and fast.
However, facial recognition is not active by default, the same situation we have seen in several models.
Since Xiaomi on other occasions have announced that this facial unlock would arrive via OTA and it is very possible that here it is repeated, but for now we are without this addition.
Photography: the 48 megapixels allow to capture more light, although it is not a blow on the table
The camera is a key section in any mobile, whether low-end or flagship. The Redmi Note 7 Pro incorporates a double camera with a 48-megapixel main sensor and a five-megapixel secondary sensor. Unlike the Pro
The double camera comes with artificial intelligence to improve the results, portrait mode for the front and FullHD video recording at 60fps. Strangely, 4K video recording has not been activated at the moment. Let’s see how the photographic section of the Redmi Note 7 Pro behaves.
The MIUI camera app is an old acquaintance and changes quite a bit from the traditional Google app. There are no news about what we saw last year. We have a navigation with tabs to which we can access by sliding laterally while in the upper part there is the HDR button and the AI, which is activated manually .
It is a quite intuitive application and here we have not had failures. The portrait mode will indicate the distance to which we want to be of the subject, a night mode has been added and the Pro mode allows to capture in 48 megapixels, adjust the ISO, shutter speed, white balance, exposure and focus. Unfortunately we have no option to save in RAW from the official application.
We like that the application allows us to select whether or not we want to activate the AI but it still does not convince us the strategy of the brands to place their watermark by default in all the photographs. It can be easily removed from the settings, but there will be users who, out of laziness or lack of knowledge, leave it.
Despite having a 48-megapixel sensor, the camera of the Redmi Note 7 Pro makes its high-quality images at 12 megapixels using the ‘ pixel binning ‘ technique that combines four adjacent pixels of 0.8μm to create a larger and brighter pixel than in this case 1.6μm.
The Samsung sensor uses this technique to try to create photos with less noise than we would have with a traditional sensor of 12 megapixels. How is the result when it comes to the truth? Really convincing if we consider the price of the device.
By day, the images obtained are very good and with a high level of detail . The focus is not the fastest, but the result is quite good and for example compared to the Mi A2 is a leap forward. The biggest problem with the camera is perhaps with the colors, they are not as natural as we would like them to be, and in the light-colored areas it does not finish illuminating enough.
If we activate the HDR mode or artificial intelligence, what is achieved is just the opposite. The images are somewhat washed and the colors lose intensity , although more detail is achieved in the shadows. Even so the result is very balanced and the images are striking enough.
In case of opting for manual mode and 48 megapixels, what we have is that we can increase the detail much more but in general we get very similar photos. At the end where we have felt more comfortable is with the standard camera and we do not believe that photography at 48 megapixels (8000 x 6000 pixels) is something that offers a special bonus.
The surprising thing about the Redmi Note 7 Pro camera is that it behaves more or less at night. Normally in these
Xiaomi also incorporates a night mode that manages to illuminate the scene without offering totally artificial results. It is not always advisable to use it, but it is an addition that for example we do not have in the Mi A2 and it shows. In comparison with the latter, the Redmi Note 7 Pro works worse colors but manages to capture much more light and
The portrait mode of the Redmi Note 7 Pro is good, not so much in the cut of the bokeh but in the general impression. The level of detail is very high and reinforces the face, also the background is not very
Here we leave you with the gallery of images at original resolution so you can appreciate the detail.
The front camera of the Redmi Note 7 Pro is 13 megapixels and aperture f / 2.0 . We have HDR mode, artificial intelligence, portrait mode and classic beauty mode.
The selfies seemed right to us, although it is not their strong point. The level of detail is correct and the portrait mode works relatively well despite not having a second sensor, but we have not been convinced by the dynamic range . The skies behind us appear almost always burned and the colors are not intense enough.
The approach works well although we do not have autofocus. While the beauty mode allows us to adjust in multiple levels the size of the eyes, the tone of the skin, soften or stylize it. As well as a more generic beauty mode with five different levels.
Although its Snapdragon 675 processor can record at 4K / 30fps, strangely it is not activated by default in the Redmi Note 7 Pro. As with facial unlocking, using a software update it is possible to correct it but it is a pity that such an option simple have to be delayed.
Yes we have 1080p video recording at 60fps with electronic image stabilization. The result is correct at the level of stabilization considering its range, although again the dynamic range is not the best and we would have liked a better treatment of the light. Sometimes it also costs him to focus and the sound recording can be improved.
Sound: with this thickness, keeping the 3.5mm jack is a good decision
With a thickness of 8.1 millimeters, eliminating the audio jack would have been almost a crime. Fortunately the Redmi Note 7 Pro keeps it in the upper zone and we not only appreciate its incorporation, we also highlight the good result we get through the headphones .
With the loudspeaker we think that we like the sound of music, although we lack some volume and power. In the measurements we obtain about 90 decibels .
Xiaomi incorporates several technologies in the Redmi Note 7 Pro to complement the sound, from an additional microphone for noise cancellation to a mode where we can press the volume button during calls and allow to increase the volume above the usual .
Outstanding battery and fast charge: what we always ask
The battery of the Redmi Note 4X was already at about 4,000 mAh, some numbers that were repeated the following year and that in this Redmi Note 7 Pro we also have. Achieving a great autonomy is not something new, since for years we have smartphones capable of holding almost two days of use.
In fact, the battery of the Redmi Note has been maintained despite the fact that the screen size has not stopped growing. How is this compensated? Since the efficiency of the processors is not enough. The management of MIUI is very good and it is a layer of personalization that has no qualms about blocking processes in the background in order to improve this point. But we do not believe that in this Redmi Note 7 Pro autonomy has been improved.
In day to day we get around eight hours of screen, easily reaching the day and a half of use . It is an exceptional autonomy although it is not the best result we have achieved with a 4,000 mAh terminal. It would be necessary to wait several more cycles to specify better how the battery behaves, but in this week of use the result has been more or less the same based on playing for half an hour, listening to Spotify, looking at social networks, some video and taking photos , all with the brightness in automatic.
But the main novelty of the Redmi Note 7 Pro is in the cargo port. And we are not referring to the small LED notification built into the bottom, but to the compatibility with Quick Charge 4+ through its USB port type C.
Our test terminal came without any cable, although the charger that usually includes Xiaomi is 5V / 2A. Even so, we have a compatible charger with fast charge and we have extracted the potential of the Redmi Note 7 Pro to get it fully loaded in just over an hour and a half.
The results in battery are very good and one of the great strengths of this Redmi Note 7 Pro. We do not have wireless charging and the device is thick, but this autonomy is an important point in its favor.
- Design and aesthetics take a step forward.
- Excellent autonomy accompanied by fast loading.
- The automatic brightness of the screen works as it should.
- The camera performs very well for the price range where it is located.
- We do not have NFC.
- We have noticed some warming.
- MIUI 10 is still not a completely stable layer.
