Many manufacturers offer premium smartphones in the trade. Nevertheless, there are always a few devices that are especially popular. Market researchers have now determined which companies are particularly successful with their top phones.
Worldwide, Apple has the largest market share in the premium smartphone sector, reports Counterpoint. The company from California controls a total of 51 percent in this segment. But that’s not surprising: Apple produces almost exclusively high-end models. Only with the iPhone Xr, the manufacturer offers again a slightly cheaper device. Recently this was the case with the iPhone SE , which appeared in 2016.
Greater distance to Samsung
Nevertheless, it seems that iPhone Xs and iPhone Xs Max are not selling as well as Apple’s flagships of 2017: In the previous year, Apple still had a global market share of 58 percent. However, many users have probably resorted to the cheap iPhone Xr, which also did very well in our test . Although it is fast and equipped with a lot of technology, but within the Apple product range, it should not be considered a premium smartphone.
By far, Samsung follows in second place of the top manufacturers. With its flagships, the company from South Korea has achieved a market share of 22 percent. The Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus appeared in 2018, followed by the Galaxy Note 9 with a Bluetooth stylus in late summer .
However, compared to its predecessors, the S9 series does not offer too many innovations – which may have led to a smaller market share than in the previous year. In 2017, the market share was probably still at 23 percent. That’s one percent more. However, the flagship Samsung Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S10 Plus, which have been available since March 2019, could provide an upswing, with several new features, including a triple camera.
Photo King Huawei is catching up
Third in the global ranking is Huawei. The Chinese company has been attracting attention since 2017, especially through the cameras of its premium smartphones. The Huawei P20 Pro from 2018 was the first known smartphone with triple camera and was long considered a photo king. Later, the Mate 20 Pro appeared, which also takes very good pictures. After other manufacturers were able to secure the camera crown in the meantime, the Huawei P30 Pro with its quadruple camera has now recaptured it for the manufacturer.
Apparently, the camera strategy of Huawei goes on: The company has in the premium sector now has a global market share of 10 percent. In the previous year it was still 8 percent. However, the manufacturer is on the heels of another Chinese company: Oppo has been able to increase from one to 6 percent between 2017 and 2018. In Germany, however, the manufacturer does not yet offer Smarthones – but it is quite possible that this will change in the future.
OnePlus opens the hunt
The fifth place in the world’s top smartphone manufacturer ranking might surprise you a bit: here the market researchers call the former startup OnePlus. Apparently, the company has not only gained not only in Germany in recent years and could increase its sales. In 2018, OnePlus managed to achieve a market share of two percent in the premium segment – which is enough for the fifth position.
In 2018, the manufacturer released the OnePlus 6 and OnePlus 6T . The latter flagship brings along an innovation that certainly has not pleased all users: the headphone jack is missing. If you want to use headphones with 3.5mm jack, so you have to put on a USB-C adapter. Nevertheless, the 6T has probably set new sales records for the company. In May 2019, the manufacturer will unveil the OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 7 Pro . Maybe then he can expand his success and shorten the gap to the top four further.
The top 5 in Western Europe
Also in our region is a similar picture. Although Counterpoint does not name numbers, it does have the five most popular manufacturers in Western Europe. Fifth place is not OnePlus, but Google. The search engine giant has introduced last year the Google Pixel 3 , which is characterized by a good camera. Here are the top 5 from our region:
We will not know the market share for 2019 in less than a year. Until then, manufacturers still have plenty of time to surprise us with exciting and innovative premium smartphones.
