With the Huawei P30 Pro , the company from China again wants to dominate the camera test lists. Above all, you have to beat yourself. Finally, the leaderboards are dominated by Huawei devices. To help with it four cameras. A hands-on.
Huawei had introduced a smartphone sensation in 2018: The Huawei P20 Pro came with three cameras on the back. With the help of artificial intelligence, every user should be able to take good pictures at every opportunity. The result speaks for itself: In our leaderboard, the smartphone was for a long time in first place, with the experts from DxOMark it stands, tied with the Huawei Mate 20 Pro and the Samsung Galaxy S10 , still at the top. Beat the two devices now the competition from their own home: the Huawei P30 Pro. The main focus is also on the camera system. This consists of four sensors, which have some tricks in stock.
Four cameras for good pictures in the dark
In the foreground is a word: “light”. Who wants to shoot good photos, needs a lot of light. That’s why Huawei has completely redesigned its RGB sensor (red, green, blue), turning the G into a G like green, just like green. This should help the sensor capture more light. To make this possible, the company also had to completely revise its camera software. Of course, the changes are of course particularly beneficial if the lighting conditions are not optimal. No wonder Huawei also speaks of an improved night mode.
The one from 2018 has also convinced, but could not keep up with Google’s “Night Sight” function . 2019 looks different. We were already able to look at the new mode in the dark and compared it to the function in the Pixel 3 XL. The surprising result: This time Google could not keep up. A painting by van Gogh, photographed in almost absolute darkness, was able to render the P30 Pro much better. However, this is a short first impression. Whether the P30 Pro can settle so clearly in the test will be shown.
Significantly involved in the chic images from dark environments is the new fourth camera in the league. A so-called “time of flight” camera (TOF), which is also installed in other smartphones such as the LG G8 ThinQ or Nokia 9 Pureview . It is used to capture more light on the P30 Pro, but also captures depth information. This should benefit portrait photos: The P30 Pro should automatically recognize which areas need to be exposed more and which less. Huawei’s promise: You should be able to shoot chic portraits in every light.
Zoom, zoom, zoom
The next big improvement is the zoom. The P20 Pro had a triple optical zoom. With the P30 Pro, a fivefold optical magnification is possible. The smartphone creates by the construction of the lens. The is installed at 90 degrees in the housing. A prism directs the light. The construction was necessary so that the smartphone can stay thin. With the help of artificial intelligence (AI) is an eightfold lossless zoom available. Huawei is talking about a hybrid zoom. Digitally, the P30 Pro zooms in 50 times. When clicking, you need a quiet hand. All too often, the smartphone pointed to the fact that the image still needs to be reworked. When trying out, however, a camera software was used, which was not yet final.
Rounding out the “four wins” system of an ultra wide-angle camera with 20 megapixels (f / 2.2), which can be activated in the camera app and ensure that you get more on the picture. That looked very good on a boat tour through Amsterdam. The smartphone can only really convince if we can view the results on a large screen. The last camera in the league is the so-called Huawei SuperSpectrum Lens with 40 megapixels (f / 1.6).
Smartphone with top equipment
In addition to all the camera functions, one should not forget that the P30 Pro “by the way” is also a smartphone. Here the manufacturer delivers solid, but does not break out of the usual “glass front, glass rear” scheme that now dominated for several years, the look of the top devices. Yes, it feels noble and high quality, no, something special is no more. After all, the glass backside becomes an eye-catcher with the new colors and color gradients. Where other manufacturers rely on black and white, the hustle and bustle on Huawei in orange or in transitions from orange to red (“Amber Sunrise”) is light blue to dark blue (“Breathing Crystal”) and beautiful from blue to green (aurora) and so on colorful as the creatively chosen names suggest.
Front there is the usual picture. The 6.47-inch screen is to be enlarged by a small, drop-shaped recess. In this so-called Notch sits the selfie camera with 32 megapixels. There is no speaker. Instead, the sound should be transported on the phone over the display. Also means: If you want to listen to loud music, only the speaker at the bottom is available. Like the Mate 20 Pro, the P30 Pro also has the fingerprint sensor under the display. When he tried it out, he worked perfectly.
The display itself is a curved OLED screen that resolves to 2340×1080 pixels (FHD +). This is not as much as the Galaxy S10 Plus or the Xperia 1 display, but is enough for a pin-sharp picture. Inside, the Kirin 980 known from the Mate 20 Pro clocks, in addition there are eight gigabytes of RAM and either 128 or 256 GB of data memory. Retrofit your memory only with Huawei own maps, normal microSD cards do not fit into the P30 Pro.
The smartphone is charged via the USB-C port, there is no connection for headphones. The battery has a capacity of 4200 mAh and should charge very fast thanks to the support for 40 Watt SuperCharge. Completely empty, the smartphone should be charged after 30 minutes up to 70 percent. Like the Mate 20 Pro, you can also charge the P30 Pro wirelessly – and charge other smartphones with the device itself. According to Huawei, the battery should last for two days or, if you are serious enough, a full day. The operating system is Android 9 Pie installed. Huawei has its own EMUI interface in version 9.1.

Especially in the dark, the quadruple camera could convince the Huawei P30 Pro while trying out. Clearly: Even with this device, the P series Huawei wants to address the photographers among you. The rest of the equipment belongs to the upper class. Whether the P30 Pro compared to the Galaxy S10 models or the iPhone Xs series can keep up, or outclassed the competition performance, we find out in the test. However, the previous Huawei devices must definitely fear for their top positions.
