The unveiling of Disney Plus begins on April 11 at 11pm today. Selected journalists and investors will find out what should distinguish Disney’s competitors to Netflix, Amazon Prime and Co. Before the presentation, we will give you an overview of what is already known about the program offer.
Despite the Fox acquisition and the upcoming premiere of “Avengers: Endgame”Disney Plus has the highest priority for the entertainment giant 2019. For his video streaming service starting at the end of the year, the group is working on various new films and series – that much is already known.
New editions of popular classics
Disney is primarily known for movies, but has also been producing directly for television for a long time. In the future, the studios of the group will also make films directly for the streaming platform, reports The Verge. One of them is a real-life adaptation of “Susi and Strolch”, the 1955 animated film, which deals with two love dogs.
The main roles are occupied with Justin Theroux (known from “Star Wars: The Last Jedi”) and Tessa Thompson (known from “Thor: Day of Decision” and “West World”). More Realverfilmungen are planned for “The witch and the magician” and “Peter Pan”. But also feature films should receive a new edition. Candidates were “Three more men, another baby,” “Father of the Bride,” “A Twin rarely comes alone,” “Sister Act 3,” and “Darling, I shrunk the children.”
Films for the whole family
In addition, future users of Disney Plus can look forward to completely new feature films: “Magic Camp” is aimed at families and is about a fictitious summer camp for young magicians. “Togo” in turn tells the story of a heroic sled dog. Also on Disney Plus are the Christmas movie “Noelle” as well as various novel films, which include “Stargirl”, “Flora & Ulysses” and “29 Dates”.
“Star Wars” and Marvel series
Series are usually more important to video streaming than movies. In this regard, Disney Plus seems well positioned: a much-anticipated production is the prominently starred series “The Mandalorian ” starring Pedro Pascal (aka “Game of Thrones”), which is not the only series Based on the film series, Disney also announced a spin-off on “Rogue One” and a new season of “The Clone Wars.”
Also wants to use his Marvel license extensively for the video streaming platform. So Marvel is planning a what-if-animated series, which should answer the following question, for example: What if Loki had found Thor’s hammer? In addition, we expect a series about Thor’s half brother Loki. Also various Marvel heroes are to receive own series:
- Vision and Scarlet Witch
- Falcon and Winter Soldier
- Hawk Eye
The Marvel series on Netflix were all discontinued some time ago. Whether they have a future on Disney Plus, is so far unclear. According to The Verge, however, there are signs that the characters come back in one form or another – not necessarily in their own series.
Competition of the giants
Disney Plus enters a highly competitive industry. With Netflix and Amazon (Prime Video) currently two heavyweights share the market. By the time Disney Plus launches at the end of 2019, another giant will have entered the field: as of fall, users with Apple TV Plus will have an additional option.
Not only will Apple’s video streaming service offer its own content, but also access to platforms such as Hulu and Amazon Prime Video – assuming you have subscribed to these services. Content retrieval will be possible through Apple TV(4K and HD) set-top boxes and Amazon Fire TV , iOS devices and computers, as well as selected smart TVs. A cooperation with Disney Plus is probably unlikely, officially there are, however, no details.
